With the narrative skills shown so effectively in his The Devil in the White City (2003), a lively account of Chicago’s 1893 World's Fair, Larson reconstructs the last and fatal voyage of what was widely considered the most beautiful ship of the day, the giant four-stacker Lusitania. ![]() ‘The sinking of the British ocean liner Lusitania in 1915 is one of a trio (including the iceberg-wounded Titanic in 1912 and the Italian liner Andrea Doria, which collided with another liner on the high seas in 1956) of the most dramatic and most remembered maritime disasters of the twentieth century. ![]()

![]() ![]() I have included below, an excerpt from an examination of the book, which I wrote some time ago. Michener does admit, in a pre-note before the first chapter, that many of the characters in Centennial are fictional characters, but are also based off of existent people and/or groups.Ĭentennial is no easy read, and I don't suggest it for those of you who dont have patience, a good ability to absorb information, and those of you who have a great deal of time on your hands. The book is meant to focus on a single town in Wyoming, but through the history of that town and the people who lived there, the book covers much of the natural history of the United States and The Westward Expansion, as well as detailed events in Native American History and a good deal of the politics that were involved in many decisions regarding the Natives. Centennial is a massive, but quite well detailed book by James Michener. ![]() ![]() About the Author Eliot Schrefers Endangered and Threatened were named as finalists for the National Book Award. Pretty much, if you can think of any combination that 5 guys can get into, then they get into it. That’s because all the guys have a relationship with each other and are all mates. ![]() Other reviewers have said, and I agree, that this is an excellent example of a polyamorous relationship. In an RH, generally it’s Person A and they have a lot of lovers who are only lovers to Person A. But, I wouldn’t call it reverse harem at all. Speaking of domestic roles, one interesting place to study is the Yoruba culture’s marriages and traditions in regards to gender roles. In a review of McIntosh’s book, another scholar Insa Nolte, concluded that, “Yoruba women adapted their skills to support more widespread cultural notions as well as continuing their domestic roles” (Nolte). According to McIntosh in her book Yoruba Women, Work, and Social Change, she summarizes that independent roles were played by women on agriculture and trade until colonial ideas about “female professions” changed the career paths of women (McIntosh). I don’t think that they shifted negatively for women, I believe it gave women more opportunity to have careers that they wished. In Yoruba I found that as time has changed and more outside influences were in contact with the Yoruba, the more the gender roles in Yoruba shifted. I found that in over sixteen countries people believe that men have the first right to jobs, that they believe males are more fit for political positions, and that women should have children to be fulfilled (Weziak-Bialowolska). ![]() ![]() To get these answer, I began to read about the differences in gender normality’s across different countries. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() She still lives in the state she grew up in, Maryland, where she now owns a bookstore with her husband.
